• Pursuant to LA R.S. 13:5713, the coroner or his designee shall examine all alleged victims of rape, carnal knowledge, sexual battery, incest, and crime against nature when such cases are under police investigation.  The Orleans Parish Coroner designates University Medical Center New Orleans (UMCNO) to be the provider of forensic medical exams for sexual assault victims in Orleans Parish.
  • Victims of sexual assault aged 15 years and older can be seen at University Medical Center New Orleans located at 2000 Canal St. within the emergency department located on the second floor. Victims 18 years and older should remember that even if they do have a full exam and an evidence kit is completed, they are not obligated to make a police report.
  • Once the victim arrives, the victim should ask for a forensic nurse or the person who handles sexual assault cases. The nurse will explain options available to victims and will give information about the process and examination. If the victim decides to file a report, the forensic nurse will contact the police.
  • In addition to UMCNO, the Orleans Parish Coroner designates Children’s Hospital/Audrey Hepburn CARE Center to provide forensic exams for children who are victims of sexual assault. The Audrey Hepburn CARE Center is accessed via the Children’s Hospital emergency room located at 200 Henry Clay Ave.
